In the weekly seminar series of the Environmental Engineering Department, Betül Aydın Küçükay, Secretary General of the All Waste and Environmental Management Association, delivered an insightful presentation on "Private Sector Practices in Circular Economy and End-of-Waste Approach." With her extensive experience in waste management and environmental regulations, Küçükay provided valuable perspectives on the role of the private sector in advancing circular economy principles.
The seminar explored key strategies adopted by private enterprises to minimize waste, promote resource efficiency, and integrate sustainability into their operations. Küçükay emphasized how businesses can contribute to a circular economy by implementing innovative waste management solutions and transitioning from traditional disposal methods to reuse and recycling practices. Additionally, the importance of the "End-of-Waste" concept, which determines when waste ceases to be considered a waste product and can be reintroduced into production cycles, was discussed in detail.
Through real-world examples and case studies, the seminar highlighted successful applications of circular economy principles in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and construction. Küçükay underscored the significance of regulatory frameworks and policy support in fostering sustainable waste management initiatives, drawing from her experience in harmonizing Türkiye’s environmental regulations with European Union standards.
The session concluded with an engaging discussion on the challenges and opportunities for further integration of circular economy practices, stressing the need for collaboration between public institutions, private sector actors, and civil society to achieve a more sustainable future.
