In the weekly seminars of the Environmental Engineering Department of Hacettepe University, the seminar given by Dr. Rıfat Ünal Sayman, Chairman of the Resource, Environment, and Climate Association (REC), focused on the topic “The Future of Plastics Circularity in Türkiye”.
Drawing from over 20 years of experience in environmental issues, Dr. Sayman addressed the challenges and opportunities in transitioning to a circular economy model for plastics in Türkiye. The seminar explored the current status of plastics management, the integration of circular principles into national policies, and the role of stakeholders in promoting sustainable practices.
He also shared insights from his extensive work in waste management policy impact assessments and the harmonization of EU environmental legislation with Türkiye’s regulatory framework. Emphasis was placed on the necessity of systemic transformation and collaborative governance in tackling plastic pollution and advancing climate goals.
Through an interdisciplinary lens combining policy, science, and governance, the seminar provided valuable perspectives on shaping a more circular and sustainable plastics economy in Türkiye.
